Difference between Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils

Definition

Essential oils are created entirely from natural ingredients. Plant components such as flowers, herbs, or roots extract essential oils. They are extracted without the need for a carrier oil using the technique of steam distillation, expressed oils, or solvent extraction. Depending on the type of plant, the extraction process might be somewhat complicated. The pure oils are “neat,” meaning they have not been treated, diluted, or modified with solvents or other substances.

Fragrance oils are synthesized in a lab. Fragrance oils are classified into two types: Synthetic fragrance oils are synthesized from chemical compounds that do not exist in nature. They are typically made of petroleum byproducts, making them significantly less expensive but more versatile. They may, however, be reactive to persons who have skin sensitivities. Natural fragrance oils extract natural aromatic components from a complex smell. Limonene obtained from lemons, vanillin derived from vanilla beans, and geraniol derived from roses are examples.

Essential Oils vs. Fragrance Oils

Essential oils are difficult to synthesize in a laboratory since they usually comprise between 50 to 500 distinct naturally occurring compounds found in plants, some of which are yet to be scientifically identified. Furthermore, the chemical components of essential oil may vary based on the source plant’s season, temperature, or growth circumstances. As a result, even the manufacturers frequently struggle to maintain the ingredients in their products.

Essential oils, such as rose and sandalwood, are usually pricey due to the intricate and time-consuming extraction methods. Fragrance oils, on the other hand, are far less expensive.

Aromatherapy practitioners frequently employ essential oils for their therapeutic effects. Essential oils are also utilized in fragrances, body goods, soaps, and detergents. Fragrance oils are often used in soaps, perfumes, and body lotions because they come in a wide range of aromas and are less expensive than essential oils, allowing them to last longer.
