The iPhone 7 is upon us. Should iPhone 6S owners start ditching their “old” phone for the new one? Let’s check the specs and find out.

The iPhone 7 was announced on September 7, 2016, by Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium located in San Francisco. It is the first iPhone to no longer use the 3.5mm headphone jack. A Lighting adapter that comes in the box will allow users to connect the wired earphones though.

What’s also new with the iPhone 7 is it now has a touch-sensitive home button, which replaced the physical home button that you have to press. The button is sensitive to pressure and uses haptic feedback through Apple Taptic. A speaker grill replaced the 3.5mm headphone jack. In-ear headphones that make use of the Lightning connector come bundled with the device. Another great new feature is the iPhone 7 being water- and dust-resistant.

The iPhone 7 boasts a hexa-core graphics chip Apple says is capable of “console-level gaming” called the Apple A10 Fusion system-on-chip. The display on the iPhone 7 has also been improved with enhanced  color gamut and brightness. The internal storage for the iPhone 7 starts at 32GB instead of 16GB.

The iPhone 6S

The iPhone 6S is the successor to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The two were flagship devices that were improvements on the iPhone 5 and were to be replaced with the announcement of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7S.

One of the key features of the iPhone 6S is that it is structurally stronger than its predecessors. It is the first iPhone model to make use of the 7000 series aluminum. Key points in the rear casing were made stronger as well, while the touch screen ICs were moved to the display assembly. It came in the standard iPhone colors.

The iPhone 6S made use of the Apple A9 system-on-chip, 2GB RAM and an enhanced Touch ID sensor. The phone’s logic board is protected by a silicone seal to prevent it from water damage. The antenna lines of the iPhone 6S are around the rear of the phone. It is lightweight, weighing in at 146 grams or 5.04 ounces. The rear-facing 12-megapixel camera is a big jump from the previous 8-megapixel cameras of its predecessors. The iPhone 6S can record video in 4K and 1080p at speeds of 120 frames per second. It also features a front-facing 5-megapixel camera and an f/2.2 aperture (front and rear).

Many tech bloggers agree Apple chose to hold back on the jaw-dropping upgrades, but it still made a good step forward with the iPhone 7. One good improvement is the iPhone 7’s IP67 water- and dust-resistant standard, which means it can be submerged in water for up to 30 minutes. The iPhone 6S may have a silicone coating to protect its motherboard from water damage, offering a level of protection which Apple, curiously enough, did not make a fuss about.

The iPhone 7 comes with the Apple A10 chip with a hexa-core graphics chip that can generate a “console-level gaming” experience. The iPhone 6S is powered by the A9 chip.

Another great improvement is the camera’s aperture, which jumped from f/2.2 to a faster f/1.8. In addition, the front camera on the iPhone 7 has a 7-megapixel sensor, while the iPhone 6S comes with 5-megapixel camera. Apple also designed the iPhone 7 with a brand new 6-element lens, boosting its already robust image-capturing capabilities, whereas the iPhone 6S has a 5-element lens.

The antenna bands on the iPhone 7 were moved to the sides, while they are on the rear on the iPhone 6S.
