Difference between Stockings and Thigh Highs

Stockings are a tight covering that extends from the foot up to the thigh, and are worn by women. They are made of knitted fabric. While the typical use of the term thigh highs refers to nylon material, the technical definition is a stocking that covers the foot plus the lower and upper parts of the leg.

What is the difference between stockings and thigh highs? There is no difference. These two words can be used interchangeably.
